Base Oil SN 500 is the most widely used base oil. SN 500 is a light grade base oil at the upper end of the specifications for Grade I base oils. It is mainly used in lubricant production.
It is a Group I base oil that has undergone solvent refining and dewaxing processes. It serves as a workhorse ingredient for formulators and blenders of lubricants used in passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as industrial applications. This oil contains no impurities or compounds that can adversely affect its quality.
Originating in the 1930s, it is the least refined type and is produced through Solvent Refining. It typically consists of conventional petroleum base oils. An improvement in the 1960s, called hydro-treating, made this base oil more stable, less reactive, and longer-lasting than earlier base oils.
The API defines Group I base stocks as: “Base stocks containing less than 90 percent saturates and/or greater than 0.03 percent sulfur, with a viscosity index greater than or equal to 80 and less than 120.”
Uses of Base Oil SN 500:
Base Oil SN 500 is classified as a Group I base oil according to the American Petroleum Institute (API), containing less than 90 percent saturates and having a viscosity index greater than or equal to 85 and less than 120.
At RAHA Oil Refinery, various grades of base oil are produced by solvent refining paraffinic crude oil, using modern production facilities and high-quality raw materials.
Base oils are used to manufacture a wide range of products, including:
- Motor oil
- Industrial oil
- Lubricating greases
- Metal processing fluids
- Additives
- Hydraulic oils
- Transformer oils
- Coating
- Medicine
- Paints
